Djokovic and Cilic will face off for the 19th time, in the second round of the Shanghai Masters on 3 Oct 2025. Last time they played each other was three years ago, at the ATP Tel Aviv, with Djokovic winning. We couldn’t imagine another match between the two, as Cilic was pretty much out due to injuries, while Djokovic was chasing and achieving much bigger goals.
Head-to-Head Record: One-Sided Rivalry
Even so, at 37 and 38 years old, these two veterans will meet again at a Masters tournament. Let’s think about it: it’s their 19th direct meeting, which would be, in any other era, a fierce rivalry. Yet, for the Golden Age of tennis, this was something normal. So what does the head-to-head look like? Well, to no surprise, Djokovic is leading it with an outstanding 16–2.They have been playing each other since 2009, and Cilic managed to win once in 2016 and one more time in 2018. This gives you a clear idea about the probable outcome of the match.

Cilic’s 2025 Season: Fighting Back
But how did the two fare this season? For Cilic, things don’t look great, but still, the Croat has managed quite a comeback on tour. He played many ATP Challengers, winning two and making one more final. He entered the qualifiers of Roland Garros and reached the first round, being knocked out by Flavio Cobolli. Then, at Wimbledon, where he was once a finalist, Cilic notched his second season win against a Top 10 player, sending off Jack Draper. He advanced into the fourth round in London, being defeated again by Cobolli. Not too bad, but not great either. Still, old-timer Cilic showed that he still has something in the bag.
Djokovic’s 2025 Season: Semifinal Consistency
As we all know, Novak is still chasing titles, but he gets stuck somewhere in the semifinals. Being present in all the Grand Slam semifinals this season, at 38, is a feat we will likely not see again in the foreseeable future. It’s a huge performance by Djokovic, despite the lack of “big titles” this season. And speaking of that, we will likely not see any big title wins for him as long as Sinner and Alcaraz are around.
Prediction: Djokovic to Win in Straight Sets
You can check our predictions for this match here, and we can tell you that Djokovic is a huge favorite in this one. Or maybe Cilic will deliver another upset, after De Minaur and Draper? Maybe, but highly unlikely.
