Jannik Sinner's meteoric rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. The 23-year-old sensation is already a three-time Grand Slam winner, and his triumphs have catapulted him into the conversation as one of the two best players in the world, perhaps second only to his newfound rival, Carlos Alcaraz.
The two young studs have met plenty of times over the last year or so, but their most recent clash at the French Open was without question their most gripping battle yet. Sinner headed to Paris as the undisputed superstar on hard courts, winning the last two Australian Opens as well as last year's US Open. However, a suspension following his most recent triumph in Melbourne cast doubts over his ability, and many wondered whether he could take the fight to Alcaraz on one of his favorite surfaces: clay.
Alcaraz and Sinner Play Out a Thriller in Paris
Much like fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal, Alcaraz has shone on Paris' famed red surfaces. He headed to Roland Garros as the reigning champion following his success against Alexander Zverev last year, and the bookies made him the favorite to retain the title. Sinner, though, wasn't about to be intimidated. The two met in the final, and on the grandest stage, Sinner looked as though he would claim his maiden title in the City of Love when he raced into a two-set lead. Alcaraz battled back to claim the third, before the Italian once again assumed center stage in the fourth. At one point, he had three championship points, but the reigning champion showed his famed fighting spirit, rallying back from the brink to save the match and ultimately go on and win it.Now, the two look set to cross paths once again, this time at Wimbledon. Much like in France, Alcaraz is once again the reigning champion, having beaten the all-time great Novak Djokovic in each of the last two finals. But despite his pedigree, online tennis betting sites can't split the two ahead of the showdown at the All England Club. The latest tennis betting at Bovada odds currently prices both as the joint +150 betting favorites to leave SW19 with the title. But while Alcaraz's recent history at Wimbledon is well-documented, how has Sinner performed on the lush green courts? Let's find out.
A Disappointing Debut
Sinner’s first taste of Wimbledon came in 2021, and while the Italian was already turning heads on the tour, his inexperience on grass was about to be exposed. The Italian was still just 19 years of age at the time, but he had already cracked the world top 20, and he was hoping to make an impression on his All-England Club debut. Unfortunately for him, though, his maiden trip to London wouldn't go as planned.Sinner did claim the opening set in his first-round match against Hungary's Marton Fucsovics, but that was as good as it got. The Nyíregyháza-born star would go on to win the next three to claim the victory, and he wasn't finished there. Further upset victories against Diego Schwartzmann and world number five Andrey Rublev propelled the Hungarian to the quarterfinals, his best-ever Grand Slam performance. Sinner, meanwhile, was sent back to the drawing board.
Pushing Djokovic to the Brink
If 2022 hinted at what Sinner might someday achieve at Wimbledon, 2023 delivered on that promise. After reaching the quarterfinals in three of the previous years' Grand Slams, he was out to prove that he had what it took to become a champion. The Italian was blessed with a somewhat easy run throughout the tournament, defeating five straight unseeded opponents to secure his first-ever Slam semifinal appearance. There, he would meet reigning champion Djokovic in a repeat of the previous year's quarterfinal. However, unlike in 2022, Sinner was powerless to resist Nole's onslaught. The GOAT comfortably secured a straight-sets victory before once again going on to reach yet another final. While Sinner hadn't managed to take the fight to Djokovic like he had the previous year, he had reached a Slam semifinal for the first time, and more success was still to come.
A Backwards Step
Sinner started 2024 by claiming his first-ever Grand Slam with a thrilling victory at the Australian Open. He followed that up with a run to the French Open semifinals, and he was determined to continue his impressive form by making an impression at Wimbledon. He headed to the All-England club as the top seed, but unfortunately, his story at SW19 would take a backward step. The Italian beat compatriot Matteo Berrettini and American Ben Shelton en route to the quarterfinals, and he was heavily favored to progress even further. Unfortunately for him, Daniil Medvedev had other ideas. The Russian managed to win a five-set thriller to secure his spot in the final four, leaving Sinner licking his wounds after a disappointing campaign.
