Blockx faces a real test against in-form Burruchaga

Roman Andres Burruchaga faces Alexander Blockx in the Estoril ATP quarter-finals on 24 July, with their clay-court meeting played over the best of three sets.

Blockx enters as the market favourite and has held serve far more reliably this season. Burruchaga, however, has won both previous meetings and brings stronger recent results, making this less clear-cut than the odds suggest.

Burruchaga owns the rivalry so far

Burruchaga has won both previous meetings without dropping a set, including their only clay encounter. He allowed Blockx just 13 games across those matches, while winning 89% of his service games and creating almost twice as many break chances per match.

Their latest meeting came on hard courts in Canberra in December 2024, where Burruchaga again won 2-0. That history gives the underdog a clear source of confidence.

Blockx serves bigger, Burruchaga returns better

Serve against return may decide it

Blockx will want short service games and quick points, because his numbers fall away when he is forced to defend repeatedly. Burruchaga's route is different: extend rallies, attack second serves and keep creating break chances.
